Sixth Form Centre, Langley Grammar School, Langley, Berkshire.

The brief for the main contractor from the governing body of Langley Grammar school was for a Sixth Form Centre collegiate building that would provide an aspirational goal for pupils to reach, in addition to providing a stepping stone to the expectations of higher education. The building will accommodate a 200 seat lecture theatre, sixth form teaching spaces, music practice rooms and staff offices.

With a building as complex and architectural as this, the choice of roofing system was critical to it being a success. Truseal UK were brought in to help with the final aspects of the roof design, ultimately specifying the Truseal EPDM Singly-Ply membrane system.

The client wanted to move away from the typical TPO single-ply roofing membranes due to the vast amount of seaming that would of occurred, as well as the attention to detail that would be required to seal the roof properly.

The new architectural roof deck was constructed from timber due to the amount of detail involved. Kingspan TR27 100mm thick insulation boards were individually mechanically fastened to the timber deck. The Truseal EPDM single-ply membrane of 1.14mm thickness was fully adhered to the insulated deck, utilising a perimeter base tie-in to fully secure the membrane.

Finally all parapet walls were capped using bespoke design architectural aluminium flashings supplied by Truseal UK.

The proposed new Sixth Form Centre is designed to operate efficiently during its lifetime and will incorporate a number of sustainable solutions to minimise school operation and maintenance costs.
